- This paperwork can help you determine your spiritual gifts, enabling you to
- serve other people and the Lord more effectively as you better understand
- your position within His body, the Church (for more information, please read
- I Corinthians 12:7-27). This is a vitally important exercise which you
- should approach seriously and with prayer.
-
- Please respond to each of the 150 statements with a number from 0 to 4, using
- the following scale:
-
- 0 = Strongly Disagree >> Please note that there are no "right" <<
- 1 = Disagree >> or "wrong" responses; just respond <<
- 2 = Middle >> honestly. If a particular statement <<
- 3 = Agree >> does not apply to you in any way, <<
- 4 = Strongly Agree >> please respond with a 0 (zero). <<

- INTRODUCTION TO SPIRITUAL GIFTS
-
-
- "Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you
- to be ignorant."
-
- I Corinthians 12:1, New International Version (NIV)
-
-
- 1. What are "spiritual gifts"? Here is one of many possible definitions:
- "Spiritual gifts are supernatural abilities distributed by the Holy Spirit
- among members of the Body of Christ; the gifts are special attributes given
- by God's grace to empower His people to serve Him and other people more
- effectively."
-
-
- 2. Who gets spiritual gifts? The Bible states clearly that every believer
- has at least one spiritual gift. I Peter 4:10 says, "As each one has
- received a special gift, employ it in serving one another, as good stewards
- of the manifold grace of God." (This and subsequent Bible quotes on this
- page are from the New American Standard Bible, or NASB.) Believers are not
- limited to just one gift, as most have a mixture of gifts which they can
- use at various times depending on the circumstances and the needs of the
- moment.
-
-
- 3. Who decides what gifts we receive? I Corinthians 12:11 says that the
- Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts "to each one individually just as
- He wills." Gifts are distributed equally among men and women, "for you are
- all one in Christ Jesus." (Galatians 3:28)
-
-
- 4. Why are the gifts given?
-
- a. I Corinthians 12:7 -- "to each one is given the manifestation
- of the Spirit for the common good."
-
- b. Ephesians 4:12-13 -- "for the equipping of the saints for the
- work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all
- attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to
- a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fulness of
- Christ."
-
- c. I Peter 4:10 -- "employ it in serving one another, as good
- stewards...."
-
- d. Hebrews 2:3-4 says that God confirmed the truth of the gospel of
- salvation "by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of
- the Holy Spirit according to His own will."

-
- 5. What about my natural talents and abilities?
-
- a. There is no doubt God can use your natural talents and
- abilities. For example, some people have natural musical ability which they
- can put to good use as Christians.
-
- b. However, spiritual gifts are more supernatural than natural.
- For example, if a Christian lays hands on a blind woman and prays for her to
- receive her sight, we all recognize that the Christian does not have the
- power to restore sight. If God restores the woman's sight, it was His
- mighty power channeled through the believer which made the miracle possible.
-
-
- 6. What about normal Christian roles and activities? There are some
- things expected of every Christian. All Christians, for example, are
- commanded to witness for Christ, but not all have the missionary gift, nor
- are all evangelists. Lack of these gifts, however, cannot be used as an
- excuse to avoid witnessing!
-
-
- 7. What if I can't identify any particular gift?
-
- a. If someone accepted Christ yesterday, we wouldn't expect the
- brand-new Christian to instantly identify his or her spiritual gifts. In
- fact, it may be years before the Lord begins manifesting a particular gift
- in that person's life.
-
- b. If you are not able to identify any particular gift as yours,
- then remember that your relationship to the Giver is far more important than
- the gifts. Concentrate on serving Him to the very best of your ability,
- however small or limited you perceive that to be. Simply "trust and obey,"
- and God will bless you accordingly.

-
- "THIRTY SPIRITUAL GIFTS" DEFINITIONS
-
- SPIRITUAL GIFTS -- Supernatural abilities distributed
- by the Holy Spirit among members of the Body of Christ;
- the gifts are special attributes given by God's grace to
- empower His people to serve Him and other people more
- effectively.
-
-
- 1. ADMINISTRATOR -- One who understands clearly the immediate
- and long-range goals of a particular part of the Body of Christ;
- one who devises and executes effective plans for the accomplish-
- ment of those goals. (I Corinthians 12:28)
-
- NOTE: The Greek word means "helmsman," the person in charge of
- getting the ship to its destination. The word "administrator"
- identifies this as a person in charge, not someone who is good at
- typing and filing (administration is a subset of the gift of
- helps). However, there is a difference between an administrator
- and someone with the gift of leadership.
-
-
- 2. APOSTLE -- One who assumes and exercises general leadership
- over a number of churches with an extraordinary ability in
- spiritual matters which is spontaneously recognized and
- appreciated by those churches. (I Corinthians 12:28; Ephesians
- 4:11)
-
- NOTE: Modern-day apostles are not like the Twelve Apostles! But
- people who are district superintendents or bishops often have
- this special gift. In spite of some Bible translations, the
- Greek word "apostolos" does not mean a missionary.
-
-
- 3. AUTHORSHIP -- The ability to use words and other written
- symbols to effectively communicate spiritual ideas and concepts.
- (I Corinthians 14:37)
-
- NOTE: Some Bible scholars feel this is not a spiritual gift, but
- simply someone with a special communications gift.
-
-
- 4. CELIBACY -- The ability to remain single and to serve God
- better because of it; to be unmarried and not suffer undue sexual
- temptations. (I Corinthians 7:7)
-
- NOTE: Not a common gift. Under some circumstances, God expects
- His servants to remain celibate, which is different from the gift
- of celibacy.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-

-
-
-
- 5. CRAFTSMANSHIP -- The ability to design or produce artistic or
- useful items to enhance the beauty and purpose of God's creation.
- (Exodus 31:3)
-
- NOTE: Another gift not normally included by most Bible scholars.
-
-
- 6. DISCERNMENT -- The ability to know with assurance whether
- certain behavior purported to be of God is in reality divine,
- human, or satanic. (I Corinthians 12:10)
-
- NOTE: A gift requiring courage and wisdom before it can be
- applied properly.
-
-
- 7. EVANGELIST -- One who shares the Gospel with unbelievers in
- such a way that people become disciples of Jesus Christ and
- responsible members of the Body of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11)
-
- NOTE: The word "evangelism" does not appear in the Bible, but
- "evangelist" occurs three times. Every Christian is commanded to
- witness, but only a few are evangelists.
-
-
- 8. EXHORTATION -- The ability to minister words of comfort,
- consolation, encouragement, and counsel to other members of the
- Body of Christ in such a way that they feel helped and healed.
- (Romans 12:8)
-
- NOTE: The key word is "encouragement," and it may be one-on-one
- or in a group situation.
-
-
- 9. EXORCISM -- In the power and authority of Jesus Christ, the
- ability to cast out demons. (Mark 16:17)
-
- NOTE: Some Bible scholars note that one-fourth of Christ's
- ministry involved casting out demons.
-
-
- 10. FAITH -- The ability to discern with extraordinary
- confidence the will and purposes of God for the future of His
- work. (I Corinthians 12:9)
-
- NOTE: Every Christian has faith, or they wouldn't be Christians.
- However, only a few have the gift of this special kind of faith.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- "THIRTY SPIRITUAL GIFTS" ALL-PAPER VERSION [PAPER.DOC], Page 19 of 23
-
-
-
- 11. GIVING -- The ability to contribute time, effort, and
- material resources to the work of the Lord with liberality and
- cheerfulness. (Romans 12:8)
-
- NOTE: Every Christian is commanded to give, but only some have
- the special gift of giving. If someone believes they don't have
- this gift, they cannot use that as an excuse not to give!
-
-
- 12. HEALING -- The ability to serve as a channel through whom
- God can supernaturally cure people in body, soul, and spirit.
- (I Corinthians 12:9, 28)
-
- NOTE: In this case, it is easy to recognize that God is working
- through the person in a supernatural way. All the gifts depend
- on God's power and authority, but it is not so obvious when we
- concentrate on the person (the evangelist, the missionary, the
- musician, etc.) instead of the Giver.
-
-
- 13. HELPS -- The ability to invest one's time and efforts in the
- life and ministry of other members of the Body of Christ, thus
- enabling the person helped to increase the effectiveness of his
- or her spiritual gifts. (I Corinthians 12:28)
-
- NOTE: The emphasis is helping people, allowing them more time to
- exercise their gifts. This is different from the gift of service,
- which is more task- or goal-oriented.
-
-
- 14. HOSPITALITY -- The ability to share a home and warmly welcome
- those in need of food and lodging. (I Peter 4:9)
-
- NOTE: Christians who often stay in the homes of other Christians
- report that they can tell instantly whether their hosts do or do not
- have this gift. It is more than just having someone in the house!
-
-
- 15. INTERCESSION -- The ability to pray for extended periods of
- time on a regular basis and to see frequent and specific answers
- to one's prayers; to regularly intervene on behalf of other
- members of the Body of Christ. (James 5:16b)
-
- NOTE: All Christians are expected to pray, but only some have
- the special gift of intercession.

-
- 16. INTERPRETATION -- The ability to make known in normal speech
- the general idea of a message which has been given in tongues.
- (I Corinthians 12:10)
-
- NOTE: Interpretation is usually not a word-for-word translation
- of the message in tongues, but a general interpretation of the
- meaning of the message.
-
-
- 17. KNOWLEDGE -- The ability to understand facts from the natural
- or supernatural world which could not be known by normal means.
- (I Corinthians 12:8)
-
- NOTE: Many Bible scholars equate this gift with the ability to
- study hard and learn a great deal about spiritual things. The
- emphasis here is on the supernatural aspect of special knowledge
- which God sometimes gives His servants.
-
-
- 18. LEADERSHIP -- The ability to set goals according to God's
- purposes, to communicate these goals to others in such a way that
- they voluntarily and harmoniously work together to accomplish
- those goals for the glory of God. (Romans 12:8)
-
- NOTE: The leader is different from the administrator. The
- administrator provides excellent guidance and direction, while
- people naturally follow a gifted leader.
-
-
- 19. MARTYRDOM -- The ability to undergo suffering for the faith
- even unto death while consistently displaying a joyous and
- victorious attitude that brings glory to God. (I Corinthians
- 13:3b)
-
- NOTE: A Christian can only be a martyr once, but Christians with
- this gift have a special attitude about death.
-
-
- 20. MERCY -- The ability to feel genuine empathy and compassion
- for individuals (Christians and non-Christians) who are suffering,
- and to cheerfully perform deeds which reflect Christ's love and
- help to alleviate suffering. (Romans 12:8)
-
- NOTE: The emphasis is on one-on-one relationships, showing
- Christ's compassion in personal ways.
-
-
- 21. MIRACLES -- The ability to serve as a channel through whom
- God can supernaturally perform acts contrary to the normal course
- of nature. (I Corinthians 12:10, 28)
-
- NOTE: Another gift in which God's supernatural intervention is
- clearly evident.

-
-
-
- 22. MISSIONARY -- One who effectively uses his or her spiritual
- gifts in a second culture. (Ephesians 3:7-8)
-
- NOTE: Missionary activities encompass much more than proclaiming
- the Gospel in a foreign culture. The term applies to any
- Christian willing to use their gifts outside of their normal
- environment.
-
-
- 23. MUSIC -- The ability to worship and serve God by composing
- or performing songs or melodies. (I Samuel 16:18)
-
- NOTE: Many Bible scholars do not include this as a spiritual
- gift, perhaps because it so often seems to be a natural talent
- rather than a supernatural ability.
-
-
- 24. PASTOR/SHEPHERD -- The ability to assume long-term personal
- responsibility for the spiritual welfare of a group of people.
- (Ephesians 4:11)
-
- NOTE: This gift is not only for those in the office of pastor,
- but for any Christian with a "shepherd's heart."
-
-
- 25. PROPHECY -- The ability to receive and communicate an
- immediate message of God to His people through a divinely-
- anointed utterance. (Romans 12:6; I Corinthians 12:10, 28;
- Ephesians 4:11)
-
- NOTE: In the modern church era, prophecies are not so much
- "foretelling" the future as "forth-telling" the Word of God.
-
-
- 26. SERVICE -- The ability to identify needs and tasks related
- to God's work, and to make use of available resources to meet
- those needs and help accomplish the desired goals. (Romans 12:7)
-
- NOTE: Service is different from helps because service is more
- goal- or task-oriented, where helps is more "people-oriented."
-
-
- 27. TEACHING -- The ability to communicate information relevant
- to the health and ministry of the Body of Christ in such a way
- that others will learn. (Romans 12:7; I Corinthians 12:28;
- Ephesians 4:11)
-
- NOTE: Many Bible scholars consider this a hyphenated gift, such
- as "pastor-teacher," "teacher-scholar," "preacher-teacher," or
- even "prophet-teacher."
-

-
- 28. TONGUES -- The ability to speak, sing, or pray for God's
- glory in a human language the person has never learned, or in a
- supernatural language. (I Corinthians 12:10, 28)
-
- NOTE: Tongues can be known human languages, ancient or modern,
- which the person has never learned, or "tongues of angels" (I
- Corinthians 13:1). Non-English speaking people sometimes speak
- in English!
-
-
- 29. VOLUNTARY POVERTY -- The ability to renounce material comfort
- and luxury, to adopt a life style of poverty in order to serve God
- more effectively. (I Corinthians 13:3a)
-
- NOTE: Some Bible scholars do not separate this from the gift of
- giving, believing that voluntary poverty is a highly-developed
- form of giving.
-
-
- 30. WISDOM -- The ability to know the mind of Christ in such a
- way that the person knows what to do, how to act, or what to say
- in almost all situations. (I Corinthians 12:8)
-
- NOTE: Wisdom is good example of a spiritual gift which can grow
- and be nurtured, a gift which increases with spiritual maturity.
